The 10th Anniversary of the ALBA-TCP Alliance
To commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the creation of the Bolivarian Alliance for the People of our America - ALBA - TCP, I had the honor of being invited to an Informative Panel about ALBA-TCP officiated by H.E. Lourdes Puma Puma, Ambassador of Ecuador, H.E. Manuel Antonio Guzman Hernandez, Ambassador of Venezuela and Mrs Yanila Reyes Paret, Charge d'Affaires of Cuba on the 20th of November 2014 held at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Kuala Lumpur and we had with us as speaker, Prof. Chandra Muzaffar of JUST.
It was indeed an eye-opener where I was concerned. Initiated by visionary leaders Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez in 2004, it saw the rise of an intergration and cooperative alliance of the Latin-American and the Caribbean countries. ALBA was formed for the sole purpose of uniting the Latin-American countries and the Caribbean to counter regional bloc by the World Powers and Economy and provide the natives of each participating country the chance to improve their status quo in the fields of financials, education and development of their respective countries despite the embargoes and sanctions upheld by the World Powers.
This alliance has taken the Latin American countries and the Caribbean to form a People's Trade Treaty emphasising co-operation and complementing each other by uniting in diversity. It speaks eloquently of the success of the social alliance of the participating countries in promoting a just and economically viable system where trades are in the form of a currency known as the "Sucre" which is the common currency used to trade within this region - an ingenious method to transform their rich resources into monetary gains thus promoting development in areas such as education, medical advancement, social upliftment & political integration. The idea of these visionary leaders in forming this alliance was to firstly have a humanized impact in the region promoting a successful political and economic platform to meet the challenges that each of the countries face with the sanctions and embargo and to fulfill their dream of independence.
This idea of an alliance mooted in 2004 by the Visionary leaders Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez clearly outlines their disagreement to join the Free Trade Agreement of the US within their region and show their ingenuity in forming a body that puts into system a way out of the countless sanctions by the US by forming bilateral ties with their common regional allies and overcoming ways to help the peoples of their countries overcome poverty and disparity.
I know that visionary leaders like these who show human compassion to their mankind face many obstacles clearly because of their dreams of independence for their state and their pride for the nation. The wars fought with the powers that be will be long and arduous and their success in implementing ways of poverty eradication and such will be overcome only when the peoples of their own nation support and live by the same dreams. ALBA-TCP is on the right course where this is concerned and I wish them all the success in their plans for a successful integration of the non participating Latin American countries and the Caribbean and wish the ones who are actively involved a congratulatory note for the 10 years of success in this area with many more years to come - shobana
